The Gift of Sobriety

God gives us the gift of sobriety and the blessings that come with it. Our health, family, friends and work remind us of His goodness. Everything He restores invites our gratitude. As we work the Twelve Steps, the promises of recovery deepen our appreciation for this gift. But with it, comes responsibility:

“From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.”- Luke 12:48

Honoring the Gift of Sobriety

We serve as stewards of this gift, not its owners. In the passage above, Jesus reminds us that greater blessings bring greater responsibility. Therefore, we must use our resources and abilities to help others rather than pursue selfish ambition.

Sharing the Blessings of Recovery

We honor the gift of sobriety by sharing our experiences with alcoholism and recovery with those who still suffer. Because we received this gift freely, we have a responsibility to live it authentically and share it generously. God grants us this calling and purpose. In response, we follow the Holy Spirit’s prompting to help others.

Each new sober day renews our responsibility to share God’s grace. Through His grace, God gives us light and truth and calls us beyond spiritual complacency. Rather than settle into comfort, we can turn away from sin and grow in holiness.

Sobriety changes us. Instead of focusing on ourselves, we look for ways to help others. “Our very lives, as ex-problem drinkers, depend on our constant thought of others and how we may help meet their needs”- Alcoholics Anonymous Page 20.

Reflection: What spiritual gifts has God given you and is asking you to share with others?
