The Juice: Experiencing the Power of Grace in Recovery

Understanding Grace in Recovery

Grace in recovery gives us the strength we cannot create on our own. As a result, it helps us fulfill God’s will, connects us to His power, and gives us energy to move through sobriety with more ease, joy, and spiritual growth. Through recovery sponsorship, the Fifth Step, and helping another alcoholic, we learn how grace becomes something we receive by giving it away.

My First Encounter with Grace in Recovery

I first felt the power of grace after I listened to another man’s fifth step in Alcoholics Anonymous. Because I had never received someone’s fifth step before, I called my sponsor for guidance. He reminded me that sponsorship is a privilege. Then he told me to listen closely and offer honest, constructive feedback. At the time, I had only eighteen months of sobriety, and I felt anxious about helping another alcoholic through such an important step. Although I had completed the process with my own sponsor, guiding someone else felt much harder.

The Fifth Step and Recovery Sponsorship

After my sponsee finished his fourth step inventory, he called and asked to meet. So, we chose my backyard because it felt quiet and private. Then we sat under a tree in lawn chairs. As he read from his inventory, I noticed his nervousness. To help him feel more at ease, I shared some of my own experience. As I listened to him bare his soul and confess his deepest secrets, I understood the gravity and honor of sponsorship. In that sacred space, trust formed between us, and time seemed to stand still. Finally, we ended with a prayer. Afterward, I encouraged him to spend time with his Higher Power, as our instructions recommend.

Experiencing Strength and Hope Through “The Juice”

After he left, I stayed in my chair and reflected on our meeting. Suddenly, joy overwhelmed me. Energy rushed through me, and my senses awakened. Leaves flickered in the breeze. Blue sky peeked through the green canopy of trees. The scent of freshly cut grass filled the air. Then I smiled as warmth filled my heart and excitement built inside me. Because I did not know what to do next, I called my sponsor.

He listened as I tried to describe the new sensation. Then he interrupted and said, “Dave, what you just experienced by helping a newcomer is what we call—The Juice.” Naturally, I pressed him for details: “The Juice? What’s that? How does it work? Where does it come from? What do I do with it?” He answered simply, “Dave, listen to me. What does AA teach us to do? We pass along our experience, strength, and hope to the newcomer.” As I kept listening, he continued, “It’s like this: if we keep giving it away, we get to keep it. That’s how we receive The Juice!”

In that moment, everything made sense. Finally, I understood “keep giving it away,” and I connected the phrase to my own experience of giving and receiving this gift.

Helping Another Alcoholic and Spiritual Growth in Sobriety

I will never forget the day I listened to my first fifth step without expecting anything in return. Through the simple act of one alcoholic helping another, my Higher Power gave me a glimpse of “heaven on earth.” In the process, I discovered a new source of power. That experience taught me compassion, gratitude, and hope. Later, I reflected on the moment and thanked God for what He had shown me:

Drugs and alcohol can never replace the feelings I receive from “The Juice.” Maybe this is what God has tried to show me all along.

Reflection: How can you give away your experience, strength, and hope today so grace in recovery can keep growing in your life?
