God Changes What We Cannot Change

Understanding What God Changes and What We Cannot Change

God changes what we cannot change when we surrender what our own strength cannot fix. In spiritual recovery, surrender opens the door to grace, sobriety, and a new way of living. As one member said, “We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” For me, that truth became clear when God freed me from the obsession to drink. Likewise, Alcoholics Anonymous says on page 25 that God enters our hearts and lives in a way that is “indeed miraculous,” doing for us what we could never do for ourselves.

How God Changes What We Cannot Change

First, Galatians 2:20 says, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” Early in recovery, I sought God through prayer, reflection, and spiritual reading. Over time, I learned to trust that Christ lived within me when I stayed open, willing, and surrendered. The Serenity Prayer continues to provide me a meditative compass for acceptance inwardly and builds courage and strength.

God Gives Strength in Sobriety and Hard Seasons

Next, Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” During family deaths, job changes, and cancer, I stayed sober by surrendering to God and receiving strength I could not create on my own.

Abiding With God in Recovery

Finally, John 15:4 says, “Abide in me as I abide in you.” This verse reminds me that God lives within me, with me, and through me. As a result, I often hear God speak through others and feel His presence in recovery.

God Changes What We Cannot Change When Recovery Becomes Miraculous

Together, these scriptures echo what recovery teaches: God does for us what we cannot do for ourselves. Therefore, God changes what we cannot change through surrender, faith, and daily spiritual action; fear loosens, obsession lifts, and grace becomes visible. That is when recovery becomes miraculous.

Reflection Question: Where have you seen God do for you what you could not do for yourself?
