Problem of Lust: Christ’s Solution for Purity

The Problem of Lust in Christian Life

A Culture Filled with Temptation

Christians today face a great challenge when they pursue sexual purity in a culture filled with lust and temptation. Advertising, fashion, sports, music, movies, and social media often promote sexual imagery. These influences can reduce God’s beautiful creation to an object of desire. Therefore, we must root our hearts in Christ. In Him, we can resist temptation and honor others as people made in the image of God.

Matthew 5:27–28 and Lust in the Heart

Jesus confronts the heart behind sin in His Sermon on the Mount: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” — Matthew 5:27–28

In this passage, Jesus deepens our understanding of adultery because He moves beyond outward behavior and exposes the condition of the heart.

How Lust Begins and Takes Root

  1. First, lust begins in the mind. When a person looks with lustful intent, that desire quickly moves from the eyes to the heart.
  2. Then, lust takes root and grows like a weed. Over time, it can choke out the love, trust, and goodness God designed for marriage. It also damages the sacred bond God created between a man and a woman.
  3. At its core, lust devalues a person by reducing them to an object for selfish pleasure rather than honoring them as someone made in God’s image.
  4. Therefore, Jesus calls His followers to stop lust before it takes hold. His teaching moves beyond the physical act and focuses on the heart’s hidden desires.

Jesus’ Warning About Sexual Temptation

Next, Jesus gives a serious warning: “If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better that you lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.”

Through this bold warning in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus leads His followers toward freedom. Instead of surrendering to sinful desire, they can pursue purity, selfless love, and deeper communion with God.

Genesis 1:27 and the Image of God

Genesis 1:27 reminds us that every person bears the image of God: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” This truth brings the message of Matthew 5:27–28 into clear focus.

Because men and women bear God’s image, we must resist lust and reject sexual temptation. We must also honor one another with purity, dignity, and Christlike love. When we root our hearts in God’s design, we see people as sacred lives created for relationship with Him.

Christ’s Solution for Overcoming Lust

Fixing Our Eyes on Christ

How can Christians overcome lust in a culture filled with sexual imagery? We begin by fixing our eyes on Christ. We also make God the true desire of our hearts. For those in recovery, unhealthy obsessions once tied to alcohol or drugs can shift into other destructive patterns, including lust. Therefore, we must recognize lust’s destructive power. If ignored, it can damage our purity, relationships, and ability to honor others as people created in the image of God.

Responding to Temptation with Prayer

When temptation enters through the eyes, we must respond immediately with prayer. We can seek the strength of Jesus Christ and choose holiness, self-control, and love. As Matthew 5:27–28 teaches, purity begins in the heart. When we surrender our desires to God, He renews our minds, restores our relationships, and helps us see every person with dignity, respect, and Christlike love.

Reflection: Where am I powerless over lust, and how can I ask God to intervene, change my heart, and lead me toward purity?
