Surrender, Acceptance and Rest

How can anyone find peace in a chaotic and broken world? The news often makes it seem as if everything is falling apart. Personally, I have often viewed life through a “glass-half-empty” lens. As a result, I can still carry criticism and pessimism from my upbringing when I am not aware of them.

Thankfully, one simple statement recently began to shift my perspective:

“The world is not falling apart; it is falling into place.”

That message encouraged me. It reflects God’s plan for salvation and His ultimate triumph, even amid today’s challenges. Therefore, I choose hope through three simple prayers: one of surrender, one of acceptance, and one of rest.

A Prayer of Surrender:

Many people in recovery learn to surrender self-will through prayers shared in Alcoholics Anonymous. For example, the first few lines of the Third Step Prayer (pg. 63) offer a clear and powerful way to practice surrendering:

“God, I offer myself to Thee—to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt.  Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will.

Reflecting on this prayer helps me understand how to surrender to God’s will by immediately entrusting difficult moments to Him. Over time, it gives me courage to face life’s challenges, renews my trust in His plan, and strengthens my hope that “the world is falling into place.” It also gently challenges my pessimism by encouraging me to love and serve others with humility and grace.

From Surrender to Acceptance:

Surrender begins the journey, but acceptance is how I keep walking it. As I offer myself to God, I must also release my need to control outcomes or carry burdens beyond my reach. This prayer steadies me when fear, frustration, or discouragement tempts me to take back what I have already surrendered.

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things that I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

This acceptance is not giving up; it is making room for the rest Jesus promises. When I stop striving to control what only God can carry, I become open to His invitation to come, learn, and let Him share the weight of life with me.

Jesus’ Invitation to Rest:

Scripture also strengthens my practice of resting in God. In addition, the passage below reminds me that I am not alone, even when the world appears to be falling apart:

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30

The yoke Jesus describes is not something I carry alone. Instead, it is an invitation to a relationship. Through it, He gently guides me with humility and love. When I accept His yoke, I remember that He is present with me. He also helps me bear the weight of a world that can feel overwhelming. Because of that, I can rest in the comforting truth that I am not alone.

Hope in a Broken World:

The phrase “the world is falling into place” gives me hope. It gently reminds me that God remains present and sovereign over human history. Even so, trials and tribulations continue:

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. – Mathew 24:35

Jesus reminds us that the troubles of this broken world will eventually pass, but His promises will remain. This gives me hope that He is working all things toward His good purpose. Ultimately, He is leading creation toward justice, healing, and everlasting peace.

With that understanding, I am invited to receive peace of mind, accept the outcome, and rest more fully in Him.

Reflection: How is your perspective of the world today- is it falling apart or in place?
