Surrender: Finding Rest in Faith

A Prayer of Surrender

Many recovering alcoholics first learn how to surrender their self-will by practicing several prayers offered in Alcoholics Anonymous.  The 3rd Step Prayer is a powerful tool as suggested below:

“God, I offer myself to Thee—to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy will always!” — Alcoholics Anonymous, pg. 63.

In my experience, step three guides me to rely on a God of my understanding, offering my life to Him and trusting in His care. Through mercy and forgiveness, I let go of pain, shame, anger, and fear—replaced by patience, tolerance, and love. Restored in body, mind, and soul, I recognize my purpose: to serve others and begin transformation. I am no longer feeling weary.

Christ’s Invitation to Rest

I also love the powerful message in scripture below to help further reinforce the practice of surrendering to God. It helps me understand the importance of building a relationship with God.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30

The yoke Jesus speaks about is one that is shared. He invites me into a relationship, guiding me under His gentle and humble authority. Taking on the yoke allows me to surrender my will, entrusting to Gods new way of life. His promise is the liberation of fear and anxiety through peace and harmony.

As stated in the AA promises “We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. – Alcoholics Anonymous, pg. 83. Although I still need to put in effort, it is reassuring to know that God works through me and oversees everything. This brings me comfort and I am able to rest.
