The Prayer of Jabez

In the Old Testament genealogies, the prayer of Jabez stands as a quiet witness to God’s power to bless the heart that calls on Him.

The first nine chapters of 1 Chronicles are largely genealogical, tracing Israel’s families from Adam onward and giving special attention to David’s royal line. This is significant because Luke’s Gospel traces Jesus’ ancestry back through David all the way to Adam, linking the biblical story from humanity’s beginning to Christ.

In the middle of this lengthy genealogy, we encounter a brief prayer:

“Oh that you would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm, so that it might not bring me pain!” And God granted what he asked. -1 Chronicles 4:10

This prayer may speak differently to each reader, but to me it is a demonstration of God’s attentiveness to our requests. It begins by asking God for blessing and then for growth. That is a bold request, especially without knowing what God may bring, yet the prayer also asks for his guidance, protection, and safety. It closes with a clear answer to Jabez’s request: “And God granted what he asked.”

I sometimes use this prayer when I feel ready to grow spiritually but am unsure which path to take. I may feel ready to take on a new AA service commitment or work with a newcomer. Asking God to “enlarge my territory” means letting him lead, trusting that his protection and care will accompany his plan.

In my experience, after I pray, something remarkable often happens. I have also seen others use this prayer and experience unexpected blessings in their lives. It can be powerful.

The placement of this prayer at the center of a long genealogy reminds me to pause and reflect on God’s response to those who pray in faith and on His willingness to bless us even in the ordinary routines of life. If you feel called to expand your spiritual program or want God to be more active in your life, pray, wait, and watch. In faith, the answer will surely come—so be ready for what you ask!
